Soft Adventure

When I first joined the travel industry, I heard a term I wasn’t familiar with, Soft Adventure. I didn’t need Merriam Webster to tell me what it meant – which is a good thing because it’s not in the dictionary. Although, the internet does tell me that soft adventure refers to activities with a low level of risk, requiring minimal commitment and beginner skills. In short; Soft Adventure is my love language.

Skydiving? No way, not for me.

Birdwatching in the Amazon with a cocktail in my hand. Absolutely.

Mountaineering? No thanks.

Hiking on an Incan trail in Peru while passing sweet grazing donkeys. Yes, please.

White water rafting? Nah.

Kayaking in the Galapagos past penguins and fur seals. Let’s do it.

Minimal risk and beginner skill is safe. I like safe.

You don’t have to take yourself too far out of your comfort zone to see amazing corners of the world, especially when it comes to family travel. Finding the sweet spot between excitement and safety can feel like a balancing act, and this is why soft adventure travel is also ideal for kids.

Blending the thrill of new adventures with comfort and accessibility will keep everyone entertained.

When I am planning an itinerary, I start by considering what activities are traditional to the local community. I wouldn’t dream of visiting Amsterdam without biking over the canals. In Costa Rica rainforest hikes and waterfall swims feel mandatory. Trying something new, especially together, gives kids a real sense of achievement.

The beauty of soft adventure travel is that it’s super customizable. Whether your kid is a bold explorer or a little more cautious, there are options to suit everyone.

Soft Adventure could also mean trying new foods, escamoles in Mexico City anyone!? As you might already know, sometimes dining while traveling can be an adventure in itself - especially if you have young kids in tow! Incorporating authentic dining experiences in the different destinations you visit is a great first step in getting kids safely out of their comfort zone.

Soft adventure is the perfect middle ground travel style for families. It’s exciting but not overwhelming, active but not exhausting. So next time you’re considering a family trip, skip the overcrowded cities and the all-inclusive resorts, and opt for something a little more adventurous – but not too adventurous!
